Timely and thoughtful preparation for childbirth is an essential step that can improve both the emotional well-being of future parents and the physical fitness of the mother, thus reducing uncertainty and anxiety about the upcoming process. In this article, Dana Zālīte, a specialist at the Adoria Health and Beauty Center, tells how to prepare for childbirth not only physically and practically, but also emotionally.

How to prepare for childbirth – in brief:

  • Physical fitness: appropriate physical activity, a balanced diet and the expectant mother's understanding of her body's processes.
  • Emotional and informational readiness: Conscious acquisition of information about the birth process.
  • Practical planning: timely identification of the place of birth, preparation of necessary things and understanding the role of the support person.

Physical preparation for childbirth

Physical fitness is one of the cornerstones of a successful birth, helping the body better cope with the upcoming stress and recover faster in the postpartum period. It includes several important aspects, from a balanced diet to specific exercises.

  • During pregnancy, a complete and balanced diet provides both the pregnant woman and the fetus with all the vital nutrients. As labor approaches, such nutrition becomes especially important, as it provides the body with the necessary energy, strengthens muscles and improves the ability to cope with intense physical exertion. For example, a balanced amount of carbohydrates, proteins and fats provides long-lasting energy for the labor process, while minerals such as iron and calcium are critical for oxygen transport and the effective functioning of muscles, including the uterus.
  • Regular fluid intake is also important, especially in the form of pure water, which helps maintain optimal metabolism and prevent edema.
  • Regular, pregnancy-appropriate physical activity is recommended throughout pregnancy. It can be special exercises for pregnant women, yoga, pilates, swimming or simply regular daily walks in the fresh air. Such activities improve blood circulation, strengthen muscles, promote endurance and help control weight gain. At the same time, it is important to consult with the supervising gynecologist about the intensity of physical activity to avoid overload and possible risks.
  • Special attention should be paid to strengthening the pelvic floor muscles (Kegel exercises), which can make the second stage of labor easier and reduce the risk of perineal tears.
  • Learning breathing techniques is also an essential aspect of physical preparation. Proper breathing, such as deep or diaphragmatic breathing, helps not only to relax during pregnancy, but also to effectively overcome pain and control the body during childbirth.
  • No less important is quality sleep and sufficient rest, as the body is preparing for a lot of work.
  • It is also worth considering methods such as perineal massage in the last weeks of pregnancy, after consulting with your midwife or gynecologist about its proper implementation and suitability.

Emotional and informative preparation for childbirth

Along with physical preparation, emotional and informational readiness play just as big, if not bigger, roles in a positive birth experience. Understanding what to expect is key when thinking about how to prepare for birth emotionally, and it helps reduce the uncertainty that is often a major cause of fear and anxiety.

  • Researching information about the birth process, its various stages, possible medical procedures, and pain relief methods allows expectant parents to feel more prepared and make informed decisions.
  • It is important to choose reliable sources of information – these can be books, scientifically based articles, as well as information provided by specialists (midwives, gynecologists). Care of pregnant women includes not only monitoring the physical health of the pregnant woman and fetus, but also essential emotional and informational support for the expectant mother.
  • At the same time, it is important to consciously create your own information space by critically evaluating what you hear and read, and to consciously avoid unverified or overly negative stories that can increase anxiety. Priority should be given to constructive and encouraging information that strengthens self-confidence.
  • Learning and regularly practicing relaxation techniques, such as meditation, visualization, or mindfulness, can significantly improve your ability to remain calm and in control both during preparation for birth and during the birth process.
  • Partner support plays an invaluable role - searching for information together, attending courses (if chosen), and simply being emotionally present strengthens the couple's relationship and provides a sense of security to the expectant mother.

The role and benefits of childbirth preparation courses

While there are many ways to prepare for childbirth, many expectant parents choose to attend special childbirth preparation courses. Such courses provide both structured information and practical skills on how to prepare for childbirth, as well as advice for the postpartum period and baby care.

Theoretical classes explain the physiology of childbirth, the different stages of childbirth, possible medical interventions and their necessity. Various methods of pain relief are discussed - both non-drug (breathing, postures, massage, water relaxation) and drug-based.

Significant attention is paid to the basics of newborn care, breastfeeding promotion, and the first days at home. In practical classes, expectant parents learn breathing techniques, relaxation techniques, and various postures that can facilitate childbirth.

Often, partners are also involved in the courses, allowing them to learn how to provide effective support. Courses can be a valuable resource for systematically learning how to prepare for childbirth. The main advantages of such courses are the opportunity to obtain verified information from qualified specialists (midwives, physiotherapists, psychologists), ask questions of interest and dispel doubts.

Practical classes allow you to consolidate theoretical knowledge and feel more confident. No less important is the social aspect - the opportunity to meet other expectant parents, share experiences and receive emotional support. However, it should be remembered that attending courses is only one element of preparation, and their quality and content may vary.

Practical steps: how to prepare for childbirth efficiently and in an organized manner

In addition to physical and emotional preparation, a successful birth experience also requires careful practical planning. Knowing that all organizational issues are in place, expectant parents can feel calmer and focus more on the process itself.

One of the first practical steps is choosing a place to give birth. It is worth getting to know the available options (hospital maternity ward, maternity home), the services they offer, conditions and specialists in good time. Many institutions offer informative tours. It is important to choose a place where the expectant mother feels safe and comfortable.

Preparing a birth bag is another important task that is recommended to be done well in advance, at least 3-4 weeks before the due date. It should include necessary documents, personal hygiene items for the mother, comfortable clothing for childbirth and the postpartum period, as well as the first necessary things for the baby.

Choosing and preparing a support person is also important. A partner, close friend, or family member can provide invaluable support during labor, so it is essential that this person is informed about the birth process and the mother-to-be's wishes.

Care of pregnant women in the last weeks of pregnancy

In the last weeks of pregnancy, the care of pregnant women becomes particularly intensive and focused on preparing for childbirth. More frequent visits to the supervising specialist are usually planned to carefully monitor the health of both the mother and the baby. Fetal heart recordings may be performed to ensure the well-being of the baby.

During this time, it is important to discuss with your doctor or midwife any unclear questions, signs of labor, such as mucus plug discharge or irregular contractions, as well as a plan of action for when to go to your chosen maternity facility.

Also ultrasonography for pregnant women in the last weeks can provide important information that helps in the practical preparation process. Although its main purpose is medical diagnostics, monitoring the development and health of the baby, the data obtained – for example, about the baby’s sleeping position or approximate weight – can help the doctor and midwife plan the birth tactics together with the expectant mother. Knowing these aspects, you can better prepare for possible scenarios and feel more informed about the upcoming process.
